Wind along the 2km road from the quaintest of local hamlets and on arrival prepare to be overjoyed by this quintessential Umbrian stone farmhouse guarded closely by its own 12th Century tower. Set amidst a stunning backdrop of ancient olive groves and picturesque sweeping green valley views Villa Altomonte is an 800-year-old traditional Umbrian farmhouse that tastefully incorporates all modern day.
Villa Altomonte is a perfect choice for those wishing to escape from it all while expecting the highest degree of privacy and would suit either for an extended family or smaller groups of friends. The interior is elegant without being fussy and a treasure chest of fascinating items collected by the owners’ extensive travels around the world. Following an upgrade, all the original features remained intact and entering each room is a welcome to feast your eyes on a spread over an exceptional amount of space.
Outside is as pleasing as the interior - families will love the abundance of grounds for children to run around, especially having a few different gardens to choose from. A perfect al fresco dining area is well positioned, hammocks and an outdoor barbecue are as inviting. There’s a large delightful private pool, securely gated and complete with a waterfall which will also keep children entertained for hours.
Take a 5-minute ride back to the village square and find a bar and a rustic restaurant with open-air dining. After a stroll around the tiny myriad of streets, stop at the local art gallery or the curiosity stall. There are even some summer evening festivals with a chance to dine with the locals who include a friendly multi-cultural group and some ex-pats.
The slightly off the beaten track location of Villa Altomonte is equally blessed with easy access to all of Umbria’s important towns - Spoleto, Assisi and Perugia are all reachable in just over 1/2 hour.
The hilltop town of Orvieto is under 30 km away and accommodates many remarkably beautiful historic attractions including the stunning Gothic Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.
Around 30 km in the other direction takes you to the ancient town of Todi, first mentioned in 1300 BC in Roman mythology as a town built by Hercules on the site where he slew the fire-breathing giant Caucus. Today you can visit many grand medieval Palazzo, and visit one of the oldest communal spaces in Italy, the Piazza del Popolo, a Lombard-Gothic construction that existed in the 11th century and is often used today as a movie set.
